Can I opt for part-time early retirement if I’m incapacitated?

“I have become partly incapacitated. Can I opt for part-time early retirement?” We were asked this question by an employee. Read our reply here.

You can start taking part-time retirement from the day you turn 60. This is also the case if you have become fully or partly incapacitated – subject to certain circumstances. If you opt for part-time retirement, you stay at work on a part-time basis, and continue to build up pension for those working hours. For the rest of the time, you no longer work and you receive part of your pension.

Part-time retirement is an option
You can only opt for part-time retirement if you stay employed by NN until the day your part-time retirement starts. Moreover, your part-time retirement will only apply to the hours that you are deemed fit to work.

Important note: is your WIA benefit due to end on the date your Dutch state pension (AOW) starts paying out? And does the same apply to the contribution-free continuation of your pension accrual? In that case, you can opt for part-time retirement for the hours that you’re on sick leave as well.

Part-time retirement not an option
If you are no longer employed by NN and you are partly incapacitated, you do not qualify for part-time retirement.

Details can be found in the pension plan published by your pension fund.

Pros and cons
Part-time pension is an interesting option if you are nearly 68 years old and want to start getting used to life as a pensioner. However, there are some disadvantages:

  • You will have less income
  • You will build up less pension because you will only be working on a part-time basis.
  • Your monthly pension benefits will be lower than if you had continued to work full-time until you turned 68

25%, 50% or 50%

NN CDC Pensioenfonds offers optional early retirement on a 25%, 50% or 75% basis. Note that no matter what, your full-time retirement will start on the day you turn 68. If you are fully or partly incapacitated and might like to opt for part-time retirement (and you meet the requirements), you can download the application form here or contact the Pension Desk for more information.
