Summer 2018
If you leave your employer on or after 1 January 2018 and you've accrued a small pension (2018: less than 474 euros per year), the value of that small pension will automatically be transferred to your new employer’s pension administrator with effect from 1 January 2019. If you've accrued a larger pension, it’s up to you to decide whether you want to transfer its value.
In which cases is the value of your pension transferred automatically? Let us explain.
Automatic value transfer
The purpose of the new legislation is to make it easier for pension administrators to merge small pensions. Small pensions (less than 474 euros in 2018) will no longer be settled, but instead automatically transferred to the employee's next pension administrator. This means your target pension stays intact, as multiple small pensions can add up to one significant pension.
Value transfer up to you
If you have accrued a pension of more than 474 euros per year (in 2018), it’s up to you to decide whether you want to transfer the value to your new pension administrator. That will depend on your preference: Do you want easy insight into your pension? Or would you prefer to spread the risks, meaning you'll have to accept that each pension fund has a different set of rules and different retirement ages. Our comparison tool ´Pensioenvergelijker’ will help you make that decision.
Note that value transfer is sometimes impossible because a pension fund's financial situation is too tight. If you have any questions about the processing of your request, please contact the Pension Desk.
